The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is recruiting a Head of Human Resources and Organisational Development.  The individual appointed will play a key leadership role in the development and implementation of Human Resource and Organisational Development strategies within the Office and will be expected to develop responses to meet strategic challenges arising from the evolving environment within which the Office operates.

The ideal candidates will have excellent management and leadership skills; experience in the design and delivery of organisation and transformation programmes; strong stakeholder management skills; a demonstrable understanding of the evolving fiscal, legislative and industrial relations in the civil service; proven ability to operate in a fast changing work environment and highly developed organisational skills.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions is recruiting a Legal & Knowledge Management Researcher.  Successful applicants must, on or before 2 July 2021, hold an honours degree (at least a Level 8 of the National Framework of Qualifications) in Law or an honors degree in another discipline plus a post graduate qualification in Law.  Successful applicants also should be able to demonstrate experience of in-depth legal research and analysis.  It will be an advantage to have an extensive knowledge of Irish law and the Irish legal system along with a knowledge of EU and ECHR law, strong information technology skills, analytical and evaluative skills and techniques, good written communication skills, an ability to work independently and in a team environment and an ability to plan, prioritise and manage tasks in a systemic and organised way in order to deliver work of a high quality against tight deadlines.

The Director of Public Prosecutions seeks expressions of interest from barristers wishing to be considered for inclusion on the panel of barristers maintained by her in the following area of prosecution work:

Barristers are briefed by the Director on a case by case basis. They will act for the Director in accordance with her instructions and in compliance with the Guidelines for Prosecutors. Retention on any panel is at the discretion of the Director, and is subject to satisfactory performance of work on her behalf, as will be determined by the Director.

Barristers are ordinarily expected to have a minimum of four years at the Bar or relevant equivalent experience in order to be considered for work on indictable prosecutions in Dublin and three years’ experience for the High Court Bails Panel.

Interested barristers should email competitions@dppireland.ie and request an application form and an explanatory memorandum on the role of Prosecution Counsel.

Completed application forms should include details of their education, career and experience to date (with particular reference to any criminal law experience in the above categories).

As the application will form the basis of a short listing process barristers should ensure that they provide sufficient relevant detail to reflect their experience.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions enforces the criminal law in the Courts on behalf of the People of Ireland; directs and supervises public prosecutions on indictment in the Courts; and gives general direction and advice to the Garda Síochána in relation to summary cases and specific direction in such cases where requested.

The Deputy Chief Prosecutor will ensure that prosecution files are dealt with expeditiously and in conformity with the prosecutorial standards and guidelines of the Office and are in compliance with procedures established by the Courts.  The Deputy Chief Prosecutor will also have a range of responsibilities arising from the EU Victims Directive. S/he will represent the Office on national and international groups which deal with a range of criminal justice matters and contribute to the development of prosecutorial policy.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • qualified as a barrister or as a solicitor;
  • a minimum of seven years’ relevant experience as a barrister or solicitor in the State or relevant equivalent experience;
  • a level of achievement as a barrister or solicitor which indicates that s/he is capable of meeting the professional demands of this very senior post;
  • a strong track record of leadership and an ability to think strategically and contribute to the strategic management of the office.
